Head lice come in three stages: egg, nymph and adult. Eggs are often called lice nits. An egg takes 7-9 days to hatch. Once hatched it is referred to as nymph. A nymph becomes an adult after 10 days of life. A nymph can not lay eggs until they are an adult. A female adult lays 4-9 eggs per day and can live up to 35 days. A female louse in only fertilized once but can lay eggs for the duration of her life.
